Koi to Yobu ni wa Kimochi Warui was another age gap romance and I did not really like it.

So I had mixed feelings about this series and I am not too sure how to go about explaining it… It’s was okay, I guess. I mean I’ve seen several age gap romance anime, but out of all of them I would say this is bottom tier for me. I am by no means some anime expert. I am 100% sure thousands of people (if not millions) enjoyed this anime, yet I did not.

Ichika Arima and Ryou Amakusa

So why did I not really enjoy the series? well for starters the art was a bit… off to me. I feel like it was lacking in a few aspects. I just felt like it could have been better. I know art style varies from studio to studio or from anime to anime, but I felt like this was just lacking energy.

My next issue is this random backstory I thought was unnecessary.

Ryou Amakusa

Ryou has three issues. 1 – he’s a massive player or as they like to be called in anime – a womanizer. number. 2 – is that he has daddy issues. 3 – would be that he doesn’t know what true love is.

His backstory with his father is what I believe is unnecessary. We learn that Ryou does not get along with his for honestly no real definiant reason. We learn that his father did not like him having sex with different woman, so Ryou moved out to live on his own (this all took place in his late teens too early twenties. Aside from that there is no real reason why they don’t click or can’t seem to stand each other.

Ichika Arima

Now we have our young lady who is in high school and has only just started to learn about love and way of the heart. Of course as a teenager she understands that ryou being older means he has more experience with everything. Of course this leads to lots of thoughts and conversations being had, but nonetheless she is aware that age does matter.

She’s a sweet girl who is trying to make heads or tails of her feelings for Ryou, but what’s a romance without throwing in a least one rival, right?

Tamaru Kai

This boy starts to fall in love with her out of nowhere, like seriously. One day it’s like they never noticed each other, as soon Ryou starts making his move all of a sudden Kai just start checking baby girl out. I get that this overall interaction helped her sort her feelings for Ryou out, but this was so weird and honestly could have done without or introduced it better.

There are other supporting characters like Ryou’s sister who helps him out with trying to win over her best friend. The woman who works with Ryou and fell in love with him and Ryou’s best friend from high school. These are all people from within the story that helped. I don’t really have anything negative to say about them. They all played their roles pretty well.

At the end of the day this series is about a young girl and an older man learning about themselves and coming to love each other properly. It was a nice way to pass the time, but I just couldn’t really get into it. Don’t take everything I say to strongly until you give it a try for yourself.

The pacing was alright and the story was nice. With a bit more effort in the art and better character interactions I know this would have been a nice anime to me. I did like seeing Ryou learn he can’t just throw all his emotions on a young girl who’s barely learning about all this or that he’s being a bit to unfair when it comes to being dominating with Kai (rival).

Their kids and his 27 if I recall. While I do understand that he likes (or loves) Ichika it was nice to see him back off for a minute. Not to mention they actually gave the two teens the chance to see if being together would work out before she moved on to accepting her love for Ryou.

They left us on a cliffhanger with her about to say she loves him, so I believe their going for a season 2.
